RUSTIC – Country

This family’s passion for Colorado is reflected in the architecture and the backyard landscape design of this home in Southeastern Wisconsin. Using natural materials and informal design was a primary goal. The clients also requested a welcoming front yard garden and entry walk worthy of the home’s architecture and scale. Generous curves and irregular full range bluestone were utilized to achieve this goal. In addition, guests are drawn into the entry by a unique focal point midway in the walk. A rustic syrup kettle sits within the walkway and is planted with eye catching seasonal color.

A technical challenge was addressed in the rear yard. Six feet of grade change was present from the patio doors to the lower back yard. A terraced patio, midnight blue granite boulder walls, and sloped plantings create a natural transition from the house to the lower yard. Two outcropping staircases provide access to the lower yard for the homeowners and their dogs. Both staircases sweep through perennial and shrub plantings and are pocket planted with thyme and sedum groundcover. Tightly fit outcropping steps lead to a secondary fire pit patio. The elements of design and installation complement the home while creating a comfortable transition to the back yard. Were it not for the steps, the six-foot elevation change is largely invisible.

The driveway also provided a challenge. The homeowner desired an eye catching, yet practical driveway that could accommodate many vehicles. Courtstone cobbles by Unilock create a dynamic balance between function and aesthetic appeal. The cobbles complement the natural stone materials and create a rustic feel.

Ample plant beds surround the home and the landscape features, providing color through all seasons. A cutting garden was also constructed as a tranquil retreat and a source for fresh flowers inside the home. Overall, the front and backyard landscape design flows naturally from one space to another. Sweeping masses of colorful plants, natural stone products, and curvilinear design all contribute to the success of this rustic retreat.
