LAKESIDE ESTATE – Country

“Colonial, farmhouse, and traditional” describe this new home that lies on the footprint of an old coach house on the shore of a quiet lake in western Waukesha County. The pictures tell the story of the primary challenge. A large hill needed to be carefully managed to facilitate the backyard landscape design. The clients were concerned about the enormous wall turning into an ominous monster staring at them from the backyard. To “tame” the monster, the wall was terraced, which created generous plant beds. The plant beds were then filled with selections of small trees, shrubs, and perennials with the sole purpose of hiding the wall.

The ornamental trees, shrubs, and perennials continue to be the stars of the show. Hundreds of boxwoods were utilized to create a strong linear feel. Dozens of roses were used for season-long color, and over 1,000 perennials were deployed throughout the site to literally cover every square inch of the plant beds. The result was a green, living carpet of lush groundcovers and showy perennials.

The hardscaping, walls, patios, walkways, and the courtyard were designed to carry family and friends through the site, introducing them to sculptures, topiary, countless urns full of annuals, a charming fountain, large expanses of grass along the lake, and the swimming pool. Touring the grounds is an extraordinary experience which is amplified by the vibrant red and white and blue paint that adorn the exterior of the home.
