Layered Serenity - Architectural Landscape

Nestled in Elm Grove, WI, this residential renovation transformed an underutilized backyard into a refined, highly functional retreat. With a $300,000 budget, the clients sought to revitalize an aging water feature and gravel patio, address persistent drainage issues, and expand driveway backup space. Challenges included strict subdivision regulations, limited construction access, and the patio’s position at the yard’s lowest point.

The landscape architect responded with a design that blends elegance and engineering. A new linear, European-inspired lower basin receives water from the preserved naturalistic upper feature, creating a striking formal counterpoint. A patterned bluestone patio edged with Lannon cobbles forms an inviting outdoor room anchored by a custom masonry gas firepit, ensuring year-round use.

Engineered retaining walls support expanded driveway space, while a comprehensive underdrain system directs runoff to a new dry creek. The result is a harmonious, enduring landscape that enhances daily living and resolves long-standing site challenges.

WATER - Traditional

What at first seemed like an impossibility turned into a reality when the owner of this Menomonee Falls residence consulted with a high-end builder who specializes in challenging projects.  The landscape architect/contractor, who collaborates with the builder, crafted a design that would satisfy all the homeowner’s wants and needs while addressing the difficult nature of the site. The specific requests included:

  • A pool with a Sun Shelf and Waterfall Wall
  • Custom Hot Tub
  • Pool house with bathroom and bar
  • Pergola with Rain Curtain
  • Fireplace & Fire Bowls
  • Water feature

Normally it is not especially difficult to incorporate all these elements into a design. In this case, however, it was extremely challenging due to the incredibly steep grades in the backyard.  Nevertheless, the landscape architect skillfully designed a two-level outdoor space that takes advantage of the grade change. Installation of the miles of pipes, wire, etc. was a daunting task as well.  Attentive layout of sleeves in and across the hardscapes was paramount to avoid delays and costly errors. The result was exactly what the client wanted – a beautiful new backyard retreat for their family to enjoy for many years to come.
