CRAFTSMAN – Traditional

Located in the heart of Lake Country, this Craftsman style home sits upon a 0.75-acre lot. The homeowners built the home in 2009 with the goal of creating a backyard landscape design unique yet complementary to the home’s architectural style. The homeowners knew from the beginning that they wanted a cutting garden, vibrant color throughout the year, a discreetly-positioned hot tub, and privacy from the adjacent lots.

Municipal regulations restricted the amount of impervious surface allowed on the site. The solution for this was to design an intimate patio space that would feel like a natural extension of the existing covered back porch. The covered porch and patio combined provide ample usable outdoor space. Grass steps and large bluestone steppers in the lawn allowed access to other outdoor spaces and kept the impervious surfaces within the restriction’s limits.

The plants selected provide color and interest throughout the year and complement the natural feel of the house. The hardscape materials selected– full-range dimensional bluestone, outcropping steps, brown clay pavers and blue granite boulders– also added to the backyard landscape design and helped to complement the home’s architectural style and natural feel.
